Finding Lion eggs

Trace your egg

British Lion eggs have been produced to the highest standards of food safety and can be traced back to the farm from which they originated.

Having problems?

  • Check that your egg is a Lion egg – the symbol will be stamped on the egg and box
  • Check that you have input the code correctly
  • You may be told that the egg is from a Lion registered farm but not exactly where it is from. Please respect that some egg producers have requested that their address details are not displayed online.

Why look for the Lion?

  • British Lion eggs come from hens which have been vaccinated against salmonella.
  • Since the introduction of the Lion Code of Practice in 1998, human salmonella cases have fallen to their lowest levels for more than 20 years.
  • In its most recent survey of UK eggs on retail sale (2004), the FSA tested more than 28,000 UK eggs and no salmonella was found in any of them.
  • Lion Quality eggs carry a ‘best before’ date on their shells and their egg box which shows that they are fresher than required by law.
  • A registration and ‘passport’ system ensures complete traceability of Lion Quality eggs, hens and feed.
  • The Lion Code of Practice includes a number of animal welfare requirements which exceed those required by law. Lion free range and barn eggs mirror the RSPCA's Freedom Food welfare standards. Most Lion cage eggs already come from new welfare-friendly enriched colony cages, and all will do so by 1 January 2012, when conventional battery cages are banned across the EU.
